The Mahalo Rainbow series is often the very first ukulele a child gets — bright colours, a tiny price and a size that fits small hands. It's important to know exactly what you're buying: this is a fun starter instrument, not a long-term one.
Specs
- Size: soprano
- Body: laminated basswood
- Tuners: friction pegs
- Finishes: many bright colours
What's good
- Very affordable, so it's a low-risk way to see if a child enjoys music.
- Light and small — easy for young children to hold.
- Colours make it appealing to practise with.
What to watch out for
- Tuning. Friction pegs slip more easily than geared tuners. Tighten the screw on the end of each peg slightly if the strings keep dropping in pitch.
- Strings. Factory strings are basic; a set of Aquila strings is the single best upgrade and costs little.
- Intonation. Notes higher up the neck may be slightly out of tune — fine for first chords, frustrating for more advanced playing.
When to upgrade
Once a child practises regularly, move to a uke with geared tuners and better strings, such as the Kala KA-15S. The difference in tuning stability is immediately noticeable.
