The Spark 40 is a modelling amp designed around an app. It doubles as a Bluetooth speaker and includes features aimed squarely at learning: it can show the chords of a song you're playing along with and generate backing tracks in different styles.
Key specs
| Power | 40 W |
| Speakers | 2 × 4" custom |
| Amp and effect models | Dozens of amps and effects via the Spark app |
| Presets | Thousands of downloadable tones (ToneCloud) |
| Connections | Bluetooth, USB audio interface, headphone out, aux in |
What makes it different
Smart Jam listens to your playing and creates a backing band; Auto Chords displays chords for songs from streaming services. For self-taught players, these features make practice more engaging than a traditional amp.
Sound
The stereo speakers sound full for a desktop amp and are excellent for listening to music too. Amp models are convincing at practice volume, but the small speakers can't move as much air as a 12" combo.
Limitations
- Relies heavily on the app; the onboard controls are limited.
- Not loud enough for band rehearsals with a drummer.
Verdict
The most fun practice amp for home players who like apps and play-along. For more volume and a traditional feel, choose the Boss Katana-50 MkII.
