The Katana series changed expectations for affordable guitar amps. The Katana-50 MkII is loud enough for rehearsals, but it can also be turned down to bedroom levels without losing its tone — and it comes loaded with Boss effects.

Why it's so popular
Tone. The amp types cover sparkling cleans, classic crunch and saturated high gain convincingly. Volume control. The power switch lets you get "cranked" tones at low volume. Effects. Five effect sections can run at once, and the Tone Studio software opens up dozens more effects than are visible on the panel.
Limitations
- Deep editing requires the computer software — the front panel only shows the basics.
- Heavier than tiny desktop amps like the Spark 40.
Verdict
For most players, one of the best-value amps you can buy: from first lessons to first band rehearsals. For the cheapest possible start, see the Fender Frontman 10G.
