The KeyStep 37 sits between a MIDI keyboard and a creative tool. Besides playing software instruments over USB, it can drive hardware synths, modular systems and drum machines directly thanks to MIDI and CV/Gate outputs and a built-in sequencer.
Specifications
- Keys: 37 slim keys with velocity and aftertouch
- Sequencer: polyphonic step sequencer, 8 patterns, up to 64 steps
- Arpeggiator with multiple modes
- Chord and Scale modes
- Connectivity: USB-C, MIDI in/out (5-pin via adapter), CV, Gate and Mod outputs, sync in/out, sustain input
Creative features
Chord mode lets you play full chords with one finger; Scale mode keeps everything in key; and the sequencer records ideas in real time or step by step. It's a fast way to sketch basslines and melodies on hardware synths without a computer.
Pairs well with
Compact synths such as the Korg minilogue xd or MicroFreak, and any DAW for controlling plugins.
Limitations
- No drum pads and only a few assignable controls compared with production controllers like the MPK Mini MK3.
- Slim keys aren't meant for piano practice.
Verdict
Perfect for players who mix hardware and software and want hands-on sequencing.
