Description

The minilogue xd combines Korg's analog polysynth design with a digital "multi-engine" and effects borrowed from the flagship prologue. It's one of the most popular first "real" hardware synthesizers because it sounds big, is hands-on and doesn't require a computer.

Specifications

  • Keyboard: 37 slim keys, velocity-sensitive
  • Voices: 4-voice polyphonic
  • Sound engine: 2 analog VCOs + digital multi-engine (noise, VPM, user oscillators) per voice
  • Filter: 2-pole analog low-pass
  • Effects: modulation, reverb, delay
  • Sequencer: 16-step polyphonic
  • Connections: audio out, headphones, MIDI in/out, USB, sync in/out, CV in

Sound

Warm analog pads, punchy basses and expressive leads are its home ground. The digital multi-engine adds glassy FM-style tones and noise textures that pure analog synths can't make, and the onboard effects make presets sound finished without extra gear.

Workflow

Almost every parameter has its own knob, and the small oscilloscope display shows waveform changes in real time — a great way to learn how synthesis works. The step sequencer and arpeggiator help build ideas quickly.

Limitations

  • Only four voices — big chords with long release times will steal notes.
  • Slim keys suit synth playing but not piano technique.

Verdict

A superb first analog polysynth. If you want more experimental sounds for less money, try the Arturia MicroFreak.
