The MPK Mini is probably the most common MIDI keyboard on home producers' desks. The MK3 version improved the keys, added endless knobs and a small display, and kept the compact, laptop-bag-friendly size.
What it has
| Keys | 25 velocity-sensitive mini keys |
| Pads | 8 backlit, velocity-sensitive MPC-style pads (2 banks) |
| Controls | 8 endless knobs, 4-way joystick for pitch and modulation |
| Extras | Arpeggiator, note repeat, OLED display |
| Connections | USB (power and MIDI), sustain pedal input |
Important: it makes no sound on its own
A MIDI controller sends notes and control data to software — a DAW such as GarageBand, FL Studio or Ableton Live, or a virtual instrument. Bundled software helps you start, but you need a computer or tablet.
Who it suits
Beat-makers and beginner producers who want to play melodies, program drums on the pads and tweak plugin parameters without taking up desk space. The pads are especially good for finger drumming.
Limitations
- Two octaves of mini keys are not suitable for learning piano technique.
- No pitch and mod wheels — the joystick does both, which takes getting used to.
Verdict
A small, capable and affordable entry into music production. If you also want a sequencer and hardware synth control, see the Arturia KeyStep 37.
