Yamaha's P-series has been the go-to "first real digital piano" for years. The P-145 replaces the long-running P-45 and focuses on what matters for beginners: a properly weighted 88-key keyboard and a convincing Yamaha grand piano sound in a light, affordable package.
Key specs
| Keys | 88, Graded Hammer Compact (GHC) action |
| Sound | Yamaha grand piano samples, 10 voices |
| Polyphony | 64 notes |
| Speakers | Built-in stereo speakers |
| Connections | USB to Host, headphone jack, sustain pedal input |
| Weight | approx. 11 kg |
Why it's a good learning piano
The GHC action is weighted and graded — heavier in the bass, lighter in the treble — so finger strength and technique transfer to an acoustic piano. It's also compact and light enough to move between rooms or put on a simple X-stand.
Limitations
- 64-note polyphony is the minimum we'd accept; dense pedalled passages can occasionally drop notes.
- Small speakers are fine for practice but lack depth — headphones sound better.
- The included footswitch is basic; a piano-style sustain pedal is a worthwhile upgrade.
- Only one headphone output.
Verdict
A reliable, affordable starting point for piano lessons. If you can spend more, the Roland FP-30X offers a more refined action, stronger speakers and Bluetooth.
