The FP-30X is Roland's popular portable piano, sitting a step above the cheapest 88-key models. It's often chosen by adult learners and returning players who want a better keyboard feel and sound without the size of a cabinet piano.

Keyboard feel
PHA-4 is one of the best actions in this class: it's weighted and graded, with an escapement simulation that mimics the subtle "notch" of a grand piano key. The ivory-feel key tops absorb a little moisture, so fingers don't slip during long sessions.
Sound and speakers
256-note polyphony means you won't hear notes cut off, even with heavy pedalling. The 22 W speaker system is noticeably fuller than on entry-level portables, so the piano is pleasant to play without headphones in a living room.
Extras
Bluetooth audio lets you stream backing tracks through the piano's speakers; Bluetooth MIDI connects wirelessly to apps like Roland Piano Every Day. Two headphone outputs are ideal for teacher-and-student lessons.
Downsides
Heavier than the cheapest portables, and the basic damper pedal included should be upgraded for serious practice.
Verdict
One of the best all-round portable pianos for home learning and practice. For a lighter, slimmer design, see the Casio Privia PX-S1100.
