The cajón — a wooden box you sit on and play with your hands — has become one of the most popular instruments for acoustic sessions, buskers and singer-songwriters. Meinl's Headliner Series is a common first cajón because it's affordable and sounds lively out of the box.
Features
- Hardwood body with natural-finish front plate (tapa)
- Fixed internal snare wires for a crisp, snare-drum-like slap
- Rear sound port for bass projection
- Rubber feet to stop it sliding and reduce floor noise
How it sounds
Strike the centre of the front plate and you get a round bass note, like a kick drum. Hit near the top edges and the snare wires add a sharp "crack" for backbeats. With practice you can get convincing groove patterns for pop, rock, flamenco and acoustic music.
Why choose a cajón?
- Portable and much quieter than a drum kit.
- No set-up — sit down and play.
- Easy to learn basic grooves in a few days.
Limitations
Fixed snare wires mean you can't switch them off for a dry, flamenco-style tone, and the body is simpler than premium cajóns with adjustable snares and selected woods.
Verdict
A fun, affordable entry into percussion and a great companion to an acoustic guitar such as the Yamaha FG800.
