Kawai is one of the world's leading acoustic piano makers, and its digital pianos are known for their keyboard feel. The ES120 is the brand's entry portable model, aimed at learners who want an action and tone that feel genuinely "piano-like".
Specifications
- Keyboard: 88 keys, Responsive Hammer Compact (RHC) action
- Sound: Kawai concert grand piano samples with Harmonic Imaging
- Polyphony: 192 notes
- Speakers: built-in stereo system
- Connectivity: Bluetooth audio and MIDI, USB, two headphone outputs, line out
- Included: sustain pedal (F-1SP footswitch varies by market)
Feel and sound
The RHC action has a firm, even weighting that pianists often prefer to lighter compact actions. The Kawai grand piano sound is warm and rounded, with a natural decay that responds well to dynamics — rewarding for players working on expression rather than just notes.
Practical features
Two headphone outputs suit teacher–student practice; Bluetooth lets you use learning apps (including Kawai's PianoRemote) and stream audio through the speakers. Lesson functions with built-in studies help structure practice.
Things to consider
- More expensive than the most basic portables.
- Like all portables, a matching stand and a proper pedal improve the experience.
Verdict
An excellent pick for students who take piano seriously and want an action closer to an acoustic piano. Compare with the Roland FP-30X, its main rival.
