Description

The Precision Bass is probably the most-recorded bass in history, and the Player II P Bass is Fender's affordable, Mexican-made version of it. One pickup, one volume, one tone — and a sound that sits perfectly in rock, pop, soul, punk and country mixes.

Specifications

  • Body: alder (some finishes chambered ash)
  • Neck: maple, Modern C profile, rolled fingerboard edges
  • Fingerboard: rosewood or maple, 9.5" radius, 20 frets
  • Scale: 34"
  • Pickup: Player Series Alnico V split single-coil
  • Controls: volume, tone
  • Bridge: 4-saddle standard

Sound

The split-coil pickup gives a round, punchy, mid-focused tone that cuts through a band without needing much EQ. It's hum-free, and played with a pick it gets a classic rock growl; with fingers near the neck it turns warm and deep.

Playability

P-Bass necks are traditionally a bit chunkier than Jazz Bass necks. The Modern C profile and rolled edges make this one comfortable, though players with small hands may still prefer a J-style neck like the Squier Affinity Jazz Bass.

Verdict

Choose it if you want one bass that works in almost every band situation and will last for decades. Skip it if you want a wide range of tones from one instrument — an active bass such as the Sterling StingRay Ray4 offers more tone shaping.
