The Music Man StingRay is one of the defining basses of funk, rock and pop, recognisable by its single large humbucker and 3+1 headstock. Sterling's Ray4 brings that design to a much lower price while keeping the core ingredients: humbucker, active EQ and a punchy, aggressive voice.
Key specs
- Body: basswood (finish-dependent; some versions use other woods)
- Neck: maple, bolt-on
- Fingerboard: maple or rosewood/jatoba, 21 frets
- Scale: 34"
- Pickup: ceramic humbucker
- Electronics: 2-band active preamp (bass, treble), volume
Sound
The StingRay voice is bright, punchy and full of "snap" — ideal for slap bass and for cutting through busy rock mixes. The active EQ lets you add deep lows or sparkle without changing your amp settings.
Who it suits
Players who want a distinctive, modern bass sound and already know they like active basses. It's an excellent second bass after a passive P or J model, and many beginners pick it simply because of the classic look.
Things to know
- Active preamp needs a 9V battery.
- One pickup means less tonal variety than P/J basses — but the sound it has is iconic.
- Heavier than ultralight basses like the Ibanez GSR200.
Verdict
The most affordable way to get a convincing StingRay sound and feel.
