Description

The TRBX174 is Yamaha's entry into the bass world, and it shares the Pacifica guitar's reputation for being a dependable, well-built starter instrument. Its clever trick is the P/J pickup layout — a Precision-style pickup in the middle and a Jazz-style pickup at the bridge.

Key specs

  • Body: mahogany
  • Neck: maple, bolt-on, slim profile
  • Fingerboard: rosewood, 24 frets
  • Scale: 34"
  • Pickups: P-style split single-coil + J-style single-coil
  • Controls: volume, volume, tone

Why P/J is useful

The P pickup on its own gives the punchy, classic bass sound; adding the J pickup brightens the tone and adds definition for slap or busy lines. It's like getting two classic basses in one, which is ideal while you're still working out which style suits you.

Feel and build

The body is contoured and well balanced, so it doesn't dive towards the floor when played standing up. The slim neck is friendly for beginners, and 24 frets give extra range for melodic playing.

Limitations

  • Passive electronics only — no onboard EQ.
  • Pickups are good for the price but not as rich as higher models in the TRBX range.

Verdict

A versatile first bass from a brand with strong quality control. Rock and metal fans who want an active, modern sound should also look at the Ibanez GSR200.
