Description

Squier's Classic Vibe series has a reputation that punches well above its price. The '50s Stratocaster recreates the look of the original mid-'50s Strat — one-piece maple neck, two-tone sunburst or blonde finishes, vintage hardware — and it's one of the most frequently recommended guitars for players who want a characterful Strat without spending Fender money.

Key specs

  • Body: pine on most finishes (some versions alder)
  • Neck: maple with a tinted gloss finish, C-shaped profile
  • Fingerboard: maple, 9.5" radius, 21 narrow-tall frets
  • Pickups: Fender-designed Alnico single-coils
  • Bridge: vintage-style synchronised tremolo with bent-steel saddles
  • Tuners: vintage-style

Why players like it

The neck. The tinted, glossy neck feels and looks vintage, and narrow-tall frets make it easy to play cleanly. The pickups. Fender-designed Alnico pickups sound noticeably sweeter and more open than the ceramic pickups found on cheaper Squiers. The finish quality is generally very good for the price.

Things to keep in mind

  • The glossy neck can feel slightly sticky to some players compared with a satin finish.
  • Vintage tuners and a vintage tremolo are authentic but less stable under heavy vibrato use.
  • 21 frets and a 9.5" radius are classic, not shred-oriented.

Who it suits

Blues, classic rock, surf, indie and pop players who love the 1950s Strat look and sound. It's also a popular platform for upgrades — many owners later swap pickups or tuners and end up with a guitar that rivals much pricier instruments. For a more modern feel with rolled edges and 22 frets, see the Fender Player II Stratocaster.
