A tuner is the most important pedal on any board, and the Boss TU-3 is one of the most common. It's rugged, easy to read on dark stages and helps power other pedals, too.
Key features
- Chromatic, guitar and bass tuning modes, including flat-tuning options
- 21-segment LED meter with high-brightness mode for outdoor stages
- Mutes output while tuning for silent tuning between songs
- DC output to power other Boss-style pedals from the same adapter (with optional daisy-chain cable)
- Buffered bypass
Why put the tuner first?
Placed first in your signal chain, the tuner reads your guitar directly and its buffer helps preserve high frequencies over long cable runs.
Limitations
- Larger than mini tuners and clip-on tuners.
- Buffered bypass isn't to every player's taste, though it helps most pedalboards.
Verdict
A dependable, gig-proof tuner. If you only play at home, a clip-on tuner may be enough; for any pedalboard, the TU-3 is a safe standard.
